5 Easy Ways to Know If You Have Roof Hail Damage

roof hail damage

In 2017, more than 10.7 million U.S. properties were affected by at least one damaging hail event. Did your home recently get hit by these damaging ice balls? Are you wondering if you have roof hail damage?

Hail can cause extensive damage to roofs and can wreak havoc on your house since your roof protects your home from rain and other elements. Check out these signs that you have hail damage to shingles.

1. Dented Gutters, Downspouts, and Gutter Screens

If you have significant roof damage, your gutters will most likely also have damage. Plus, it is easier to spot dents on your gutters and downspouts.

Also check for small dents in your roof vents, metal flashing, and valleys. These metal components are just as important as shingles to keep your home dry. Damage is easier to spot on these areas too—just look from different angles to be sure.

2. Dents in Shingles

You can check out your shingles for signs of damage. This will require a ladder, so if you are not comfortable, you should not climb on your roof. Try looking out a second-story window or request a consultation instead.

For asphalt shingles, look for loss of granules that will expose your roof to UV rays and elements. Your roof should not have any shiny spots.

Wood shingles will be split or have impact marks. Your shingles should not have any sharp edges.

Metal roofing is one of the easiest to spot hail damage because you can see the dents. Clay and slate roofing will have gouges and cracks if there is damage.

3. Exposed Roofing

You may also be missing pieces along your roof if you have asphalt roofing. Look for any missing shingles along with damage. You do not want any exposed areas because you could get a leak or have additional roof damage in the future, including mold or structural damage.

4. Bruising

Bruising is smaller than denting. To find bruises, feel along the surface to see if you feel any dimples. You can’t always see bruising.

If the bruising is small enough, you may not need to do anything but keep an eye on your roof. It can, however, predict future wear and tear.

When you press on the dimples, you should not get much give.  If so, your shingles may be decaying.

5. Curling Shingles

Anytime your shingles curl, this is a sign of damage. High winds have lifted your shingles, and they are compromised. This is an obvious sign of damage.

You will need to repair the damaged areas. If there is only a small area, contractors can use cement to secure the edges.
